An impressive gold cigarette case, crafted in 56 zolotnik gold (14K) by the firm E. BURKHARD, represents a high-quality and characteristic example of pre-revolutionary Russian jewellery production of the early 20th century. The piece features an expressive two-tone treatment combining yellow and rose gold and is decorated with a relief chevron pattern (gadrooned chevron), forming a clear diagonal rhythm across the surface.

The geometrisation of form, pronounced constructive character of the ornament and strict organisation of planes reflect the transitional artistic language from late Art Nouveau to early Art Deco. The contrast between matte and polished surfaces enhances the decorative expressiveness and highlights the technical precision of execution.

The cigarette case is fitted with a push-button clasp set with a natural sapphire cabochon, emphasising its representative and status-oriented character. The interior is fully gilded. The hinge and clasp construction shows precise fitting and reliable engineering, characteristic of high-grade factory workmanship intended for a discerning and affluent clientele, including officers and senior officials.

The firm E. BURKHARD occupied a notable position in the history of Saint Petersburg jewellery, watchmaking and goldsmith production from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The jewellery and watchmaking trade and production house was established as an independent enterprise no later than 1897, when Eduard Eduardovich Burkhard, a merchant of the second guild, was recorded as the owner of an operating firm and retail premises in Saint Petersburg. From the late 19th century until 1916–1917, the firm functioned actively, maintaining shops in prestigious central districts of the capital, including Nevsky Prospekt, and catering to a wealthy urban and officer clientele.

Eduard Burkhard was one of the key figures within the professional community of the capital’s jewellers and served as Chairman of the “Society of Jewellers, Gold- and Silversmiths and Traders of the City of Saint Petersburg”, underscoring his authority in the field and his active role in shaping professional standards. The firm operated as a major trade and production house, combining retail activity, manufacture and quality control.

The firm’s range included watches, jewellery and a wide array of personal and representational accessories, notably cigarette cases, snuff boxes, cases, card holders and accessories for male attire. In this category, objects produced by the firm E. BURKHARD are distinguished by restrained aesthetics, a high level of engineering and quality of execution. Artistically, the firm’s works reflect the transitional phase from late Art Nouveau to the emerging Art Deco style, evident in the geometrisation of forms, rhythmic organisation of surfaces and the rejection of excessive ornamentation.

The firm’s activity was terminated after the revolutionary events of 1917 as a result of the nationalisation of private trade and industrial enterprises. By 1918, E. BURKHARD had ceased to exist as a private jewellery and watchmaking firm. Objects produced during its period of activity belong to the final stage of pre-revolutionary Saint Petersburg jewellery art and are today regarded as significant examples of early 20th-century decorative art.

Overall condition good. Minor traces of careful use consistent with age. The case is free from deformation. Clasp and hinges function correctly. No losses or signs of later intervention observed.
