Jocelyne Seguin (1917/21–1999) represents a unique strand of postwar lyrical expressionism that emerged in mid-20th-century France. Her work synthesizes intimate feminine sensibility with the luminous atmosphere of Provence, particularly Nice’s Cimiez district, long associated with Matisse and the Mediterranean art tradition.
Specializing in still lifes and floral subjects, Seguin reinterpreted classical decorative forms through modern painterly language. Works like Minuetto express musical rhythm and chromatic harmony in pictorial form. Her floral motifs serve not only as aesthetic themes but also as emblems of romantic femininity, nostalgic reverie, and eternal summer.
The inscription Villa Champenois, Avenue de Picardie, Nice – Cimiez links her art to a historic quarter favored by French and Russian émigré artists. The provenance from Galerie Drap d’Or, a symbol of Côte d’Azur artistic prestige from the 1960s to 1980s, further affirms the cultural and collectible value of her work.
With tapestry-like surfaces, vibrant chromatic schemes, and luminous brushwork, Seguin’s painting is a testament to refined taste and artistic serenity of her era.
