Short & Mason, founded in 1875 in London, became a leading maker of barometers, anemometers, compasses, and scientific accessories during a time when luxury and precision defined upper-class life. The firm earned a reputation for engineering innovation paired with refined decorative style.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the company expanded to include refined desk and interior objects. Lighthouse-shaped lighters grew especially popular in the interwar years, when Art Deco objects, both functional and symbolic, were in vogue. They were often presented as gifts, embodying both elegance and technical sophistication.

This lighter represents the spirit of innovation in early 20th-century Britain. The integrated electric ignition mechanism was a novelty of the period, while the lighthouse form symbolized reliability and adventure. Such pieces were common in cigar rooms, libraries, and parlors of the British elite and are now sought-after collectibles.
