A rare wine decanter with a tilting pour mechanism, silver-plated, mounted on an expressive cast base with animalistic claw feet. The construction comprises a metal frame with a horizontal bottle holder and a screw mechanism that allows the vessel to tilt smoothly without shaking. The mechanism is operated via a side handle with a bone or bone-like grip.
The decorative base is formed as six curved clawed legs, stylized in zoomorphic or Gothic forms. The central vertical support mimics a gnarled tree branch, introducing naturalistic and Neo-Gothic motifs. The detailed modeling of relief, musculature, and ornament highlights the piece’s belonging to the Belle Époque decorative aesthetic, where functionality merges harmoniously with artistic expression.

Wine decanters with bottle-tilting mechanisms emerged in France and Britain in the second half of the 19th century. They were designed to serve aged wines without disturbing the sediment, by gently tilting the bottle. This invention became an essential part of the gastronomic etiquette of the Belle Époque, when the aesthetics of the table took on the character of theatrical performance.
Such items were produced in Parisian and Lyonnaise workshops, as well as in the ateliers of renowned manufacturers such as Christofle and Gallia. Their artistic execution often incorporated elements of Gothic style, symbolism, and naturalism, transforming utilitarian objects into works of art. Stylizations in the form of claws, branches, and paws were typical of the decorative language of the late 19th century, symbolizing the fusion of nature, myth, and function. These accessories reflected not only the taste of the era but also the social standing of their owners, creating a distinctive atmosphere around the wine ritual.
In good condition. All decorative and mechanical elements are fully preserved and function properly. Patina consistent with age.
