A rare and expressive snuffbox in the form of a mouse, carved from hollow natural banded agate, exemplifies the refined fusion of lapidary and silversmithing craftsmanship. The fully detachable lid is a sculptural composition in the shape of a mouse, with delicately rendered ears, paws, and fur. The flat, oval base is made of solid agate and set in a silver mount engraved with a wave-like pattern and embellished with old-cut stones: sapphires, garnets, and rubies. The mouse’s eyes are set with natural cabochon-cut sapphires, lending the figure depth and a lifelike quality.

In the second half of the 19th century and at the turn of the 20th, animal-form snuffboxes became emblems of refined taste and collectible elegance. The mouse, as an artistic symbol, embodied playfulness, secrecy, and irony, and gained popularity among symbolist and decorative artists of the fin-de-siècle era. French craftsmen, especially in Paris and Lyon, frequently adopted zoomorphic forms, offering clients unique and occasionally surreal luxury objects.

Striped agate, thanks to its naturally layered structure, was ideal for such creations. Its soft luster, translucency, and suitability for fine carving allowed the crafting of highly realistic miniature figures. Combined with silver mounts and old-cut gems, such pieces achieved sophisticated completeness. The mouse-shaped snuffbox thus became not only a functional item but also an elegant accessory fit for a salon or private collection.

Comparable works can be found in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Among the renowned masters who created similar miniatures are Froment-Meurice, Odiot, and Vever. The boar’s head hallmark confirms the French origin and high quality of the silver mounting.

Overall condition is excellent. Minor surface wear to the silver. The agate shows no chips.
