A rare silver salt throne in the form of a Russian terem represents an outstanding example of Moscow decorative art from the late 19th century, created in the renowned jewelry workshop of Gustav Klingert. The architectural form of the piece, inspired by motifs of ancient Russian wooden architecture, reflects the period’s turn toward national roots and folk traditions. The salt throne combines refined jewelry craftsmanship with symbolic meaning, evoking the image of the terem as a sign of domestic comfort, prosperity, and hospitality.

The body and high decorative backrest are adorned with intricate ornamentation of vegetal scrolls and geometric friezes executed in the technique of champlevé enamel. The enamel palette features deep shades of cobalt blue, emerald green, turquoise, and white. The entire surface, including the inner parts and base, is gilded, lending the piece a festive and noble appearance. The combination of warm gold tones and vivid enamel hues creates a harmonious sense of richness typical of the Moscow school of the late 19th century.

Gustav Klingert (1830s–1890s) was one of the leading Moscow silversmiths of the second half of the 19th century. A German by origin, he founded his own workshop in the 1860s, which quickly gained a reputation for the highest quality, refined taste, and masterful use of enamel techniques. Klingert’s works are distinguished by elegant proportions, clarity of form, and vibrant color combinations.

During the reign of Alexander III, Moscow silversmiths — including Klingert — played a key role in shaping the Neo-Russian style, which sought to revive national art traditions. Drawing upon ancient Russian motifs and architectural imagery, they created works that combined heritage with technical excellence.

This salt throne in the form of a terem exemplifies that movement: uniting architectural symbolism, enamel decoration, and exquisite gilding, it embodies the artistic grandeur and spiritual essence of old Russia. Such pieces adorned festive tables and were also presented as symbolic gifts expressing wishes of abundance, peace, and prosperity.

In good collectible condition. Full gilding without losses, even and bright. Enamels with minor surface chips consistent with age. Natural patina enhances authenticity and decorative expression. No dents, cracks, or signs of restoration.
